In order to reduce costs for employers, CDHC policies seek to put the decisions in the hands of the employee by shifting a larger load of the healthcare cost to the consumer.
There are pros and cons to these plans. Consumer-driven health care plans (CDHPs) led to a 25% lower employee satisfaction rate compared to traditional employer managed plans. On the other hand, they do moderately lower costs for employers overall. Similarly, they can save money for healthy employees that do not spend lots of money on healthcare.
Employees with consumer driven healthcare plans tend to disincentivize trips to the doctor and become more price conscious of the cost of treatment. These plans can be a workable option for the company that has a comparatively lower budget for employee benefits but still wants to provide care. That being said, the drawbacks with employee satisfaction are worth consideration as well.
